Carpentry School Day 7

This year’s founding anniversary event in Okayama was “plane setup.”
I was thrilled to finally get my hands on a plane, but it turned out to be quite a challenge.

First thing in the morning, Mr. Yamamoto warned me, “Planes are tricky,” and he was absolutely right.
I thought we’d start by practicing aligning the two blades, but first we had to gradually shave the wooden part where the main blade fits, adjusting it to the blade. Then we hammered the blade to correct any warping before moving on to sharpening.

I spent the entire day struggling with adjustments, my head spinning, but in the end, I didn’t reach the stage where it could actually cut.
Even so, I feel it was deeply meaningful to take on this new challenge at this milestone 11th anniversary.

本日でイッケン設計室は11周年を迎えることができました。

今年の創立記念日は、岡山にて「鉋（かんな）のセットアップ」。
いよいよ鉋に触れられると喜んでいたのですが、これがなかなかの難題でした。

朝一番に山本さんから「鉋は難しいよ」と声を掛けてもらったのですが、その言葉通り。
二つの刃の出を整える練習かと思いきや、まずは鉋身（メインの刃）が納まる木部を、刃に合わせて少しずつ削っていくところから始まります。さらに刃を叩いて曲がりを調整し、研ぎの作業へと進んでいきます。

一日中、頭を混乱させながら調整に挑みましたが、結局「削れる」という段階までは辿り着けませんでした。
それでも、11周年という節目に新しいことへ挑戦できたことは、大きな意味があったように思います。
