Carpentry School: Special Edition – Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

I took a short trip from Okayama City to visit the Bikan Historical Quarter in Kurashiki. Walking through the white-walled streets, it feels like time flows more slowly here, making it a delightful place just to stroll around.
First stop: the Kurashiki Mingei Museum. Housed in a renovated Edo-period rice storehouse, it’s packed with highlights like the special exhibition on straw mats and Serizawa-designed mats. I always visit folk art museums whenever I find one across Japan, and this is the second folk art museum established in Japan.
Next, I visited the “Ōhara Residence”. As expected of a designated Important Cultural Property, its presence is truly magnificent. The view of the garden from the detached building was especially splendid, and I couldn’t help but be drawn to the tea room visible beyond the garden.
This visit was a bit rushed, but next time I want to take my time and stroll through again.

岡山市から少し足を伸ばして、倉敷美観地区へ。
白壁の町並みを歩くと、どこか時間がゆっくり流れているようで、散策するだけでも楽しい場所です。

まずは「倉敷民藝館」へ。江戸時代の米倉を改装した建物で、企画展のはなむしろ、芹沢デザインのむしろなど見所がいっぱいです。日本各地で民藝館を見つけると必ず訪れるのですが、日本で2番目にできた民芸館です。

続いて「大原本邸」。重要文化財に指定されているだけあって、その佇まいは圧巻です。特に離れから眺める庭の景色が素晴らしく、庭越しに見える茶室にはつい心を惹かれました。

今回は駆け足での訪問でしたが、次はゆっくり時間をかけて、もう一度歩いてみたいと思います。
