Carpentry School: Day 4
Before joining the architectural design firm Lemming House, I worked at a construction company for about two years.
What comes to mind is the hardware store on my first day. On my way back from the site, I stopped by the hardware store and had them assemble a full set of necessary tools: chisels, ink pots, mallets, mini bars, saws, and more. The time spent organizing my own tools into the toolbox was filled with joy.

However, as a site supervisor, I rarely had the chance to use chisels or planes, and they’ve remained untouched until now.
Yesterday, I tried using a chisel I’d sharpened with great effort, and its sharpness amazed me. The satisfying sensation of smoothly shaving wood is incredibly pleasant, enough to make me lose myself in the task. Yet, if you misread the grain direction or make a mistake in how you set the blade, the wood can become ragged in an instant.

Today was another day that made me truly appreciate how much I’m surrounded and supported by skilled carpenters and furniture makers in my daily work.

レミングハウスに入る前、私は工務店で2年ほど働かせていただきました。
思い出すのは初日の金物屋さん。現場からの帰りに金物屋さんに立ち寄り、差金や墨つぼ、玄能、ミニバール、そして鋸など、必要な道具を一式そろえてもらったことです。自分の道具を工具箱に収めていく時間は、喜びに満ちていました。

ただ、鑿や鉋は現場監督の立場ではほとんど使う機会がなく、なかなか触れることなく今に至っています。
昨日、気合を入れて研いだ鑿を使ってみると、その切れ味に驚かされました。サクサクと木を削っていく感覚は心地よく、それだけで夢中になれます。けれども木目の方向を読み違え、刃の入れ方を誤れば、あっという間に木がボロボロになってしまうのです。

今日もまた、普段いかに熟練の大工さんや家具屋さんたちに囲まれ、助けられながら仕事をさせてもらっているのかを、改めて実感する一日となりました。
